25 Extra Root Canals

An Australian dentist has been ordered to pay more than $345,000 in compensation and interest for giving a patient 28 root canals when he only needed 3 root canals. Todd Dean was working as a tree trimmer when he got hit in the face by a small log in December 2001. Dean suffered 3 chipped teeth, which he sought treatment for by Dr. Mark Phung.

During 2002 and 2003, Dr. Phung charged Dean’s employer’s insurance company $73,645 to perform root canals on each of his 28 teeth.

One dental expert who reviewed Mr. Dean’s mouth said the work was ”a complete case of fraud … by the dentist’‘ and an ”extremely poor dentistry job”.

It was determined that Dean only needed 3 root canals and the other 25 root canals were excessive and unnecessary.

The judge ordered Dr. Phung to pay the money he had retained, plus other costs, including those to rectify the ”largely destructive” work done by him.

The Dental Board is currently review the case to determine if Dr. Phung will lose is dental license.

I think it is safe to say that if this happened in the US Mr. Dean would be a multi millionaire now! I tried to find more information about Dr. Phung, but he does not have a website. He does work in BEVERLY HILLS NSW (New South Wales) Australia.
