Mom convicted over lack of dental care for son

A Washington woman was convicted Wednesday of second-degree criminal mistreatment for not seeking dental care for her developmentally disabled 10-year-old son.

The boy suffered several abscesses from severe decay, which required several of his adult teeth to be removed. The condition could have been life-threatening if allowed to continue without treatment, according to a doctor.

The defense attorney contended she was unaware of the extent of the problem and that she lacked money for expenses, such as transporting the child to appointments. Financial hardship is a permitted defense for the crime under state law.

Sentencing is scheduled set for March 1.
