NY dentist accused of insurance fraud

Dr. Joanne Baker
Joanne Baker, D.D.S.,51, was arraigned on a 13-count indictment charging her with grand larceny, insurance fraud, scheme to defraud and falsifying business records, all felonies.
Dr. Baker is accused of fraudulently billing Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. (MetLife) for $13,000 over a 2 year starting in September 2006. About 18 patients came forward in 2008 to say Baker had billed MetLife for dental services she never provided.
She was arrested in September, 2008, but she allegedly continued submitting phony claims for an additional $2,600 between December 2008 and February 2009. She is also accused of trying to prevent patients from reporting her actions and misleading investigators. She was re-arrested in April 2009.
Dr. Baker is currently free on $10,000 bail. She faces up to 7 years in state prison. Her dental license has been placed on probation.
