San Diego Dental Office Manager Pleads Guilty to Theft

Emily Marie Forbes, 48, pleaded guilty Tuesday to guilty to elder financial abuse, burglary, grand theft, forgery and identity theft. She stole about $72,000 from the bank accounts of 18 patients of several area dental offices where she worked as office manager.  She will be sentenced to five years and four months in prison, with a recommendation that her custody be served in a Department of Corrections drug rehabilitation program.

Forbes was arrested August 18th while working at Scripps Ranch Family Dentistry. Police said she committed the crimes over several years while working at five dental offices in throughout San Diego.

Authorities said Forbes stole checks from patients, and then used their personal and financial information to open fraudulent credit accounts. She also used her employers’ credit-card terminals to refund money to checking accounts to which she had access.

Police said Forbes sometimes asked patients to leave their checks blank, telling them that she would stamp the dental office’s name on the check. She then deposited the checks into her own account, authorities said.
