The cost of the Tooth Fairy

All parents have come to this situation, how much should the Tooth Fairy pay for a tooth?

In a survey by the Chicago Dental Society earlier this year, more than half of the respondents thought $1 per tooth was a fair price for the Tooth Fairy. However, 16 percent said the Fairy should pay $2 per tooth, and 17 percent said $5 per tooth.

There are several things to consider when thinking of a fair price. Should a child get more for molars? Should it count if a dentist has to extract a tooth because it is so rotten from all of the soda and candy?

One must keep in mind that children lose 20 teeth between the ages of 4 and 13. At 5 dollars a piece that can really add up. Some parents often will pay more as the child gets older because lets face it, a pre-teen is not going to be too excited about a couple of dollars!

On a recent tooth exchange with a friend’s son, the tooth fairy had to pay $10 for a tooth because she didn’t have any bills smaller than a ten! My friend’s son’s excited response after waking up in the morning was, “Mom the tooth fairy wasn’t cheap like last time!” Unfortunately for the tooth fairy, the remaining teeth are going to be more expensive because you can’t give less next time.

Some kids get small gifts in place of money in some families. This is especially true for small children because they don’t understand the value of money, but they do like toys!

I think that a better system would be for the tooth fairy to make deposits into a dental fund to help pay for future dental care like braces and cavities. What do you think?
