Update: Bookkeeper guilty of stealing $1.6 million from Oceanside dentist

A former bookkeeper who was sentenced last month to eight years in prison for stealing from Dr. James Hargas’s dental office was ordered Tuesday to pay more than $1.5 million in restitution.

Assets seized from Wafford’s Temecula home and her bank account amount to about $8,000 and several vehicles and with at least 4 years in jail with no income, it is unclear how much money Dr. Hargas is likely to recover.

Hargas, 58, said Wafford’s thefts had forced him to mortgage his home, take on credit card debt and use his retirement savings to cover business expenses.
